एक चिड़ा और एक चिड़िया थी। दोनों बड़े प्रेम से साथ साथ रहते थे। एक दिन चिड़ा को चावल व चिड़िया को दाल मिली। दोनों ने मिलकर खिचड़ी बनाने की सोची। दोनों अग्नि-पानी व बर्तन की व्यवस्था में जुट गये। चिड़िया कुम्हार के यहाँ से सिराई (मिट्टी का सकोरा) भी ले आई। पानी हेतु चिड़ा कुआं पर गया तो पानी खींचते समय उसका पैर फिसल गया और वह कुएं में गिर गया।
बहुत देर तक जब चिड़ा नहीं आया तो चिड़िया को चिंता होने लगी। चिड़िया ने कुएं पर जाकर देखा तो चिड़ा कुएं में गिरा पड़ा था। ये देखकर चिड़िया जोर-जोर से रोने लगी।
चिड़िया के रोने की आवाज सुनकर एक बिल्ली वहाँ आ गयी और पूछने लगी- चिड़िया तुम रो क्यों रही हो? रोती हुई चिड़िया ने कहा- बिल्ली मौसी मेरा चिड़ा कुएं में गिर गया है, उसे तुम बचा लो। चिड़िया की बात सुनकर बिल्ली मुस्कराई और कहा- कुएं से निकाल तो दूंगी पर बाहर लाकर उसे खा जाऊंगी। चिड़िया ने कुछ सोचकर, हाँ भर ली।
बिल्ली अपने प्रयास से चिड़े को कुएं से बाहर ले आती है और कहती है- चिड़िया, अब इसे मैं खा रही हूँ ये सुनकर चिड़िया बोली- मौसी! इसे सूखने दे, माटी झड़कने दे तब खा लेना। थोड़ी देर रुककर बिल्ली फिर खाने की कहने लगी तो चिड़िया ने फिर कहा- इतनी जल्दी क्या हो रही है मौसी, इसे सूखने दे, माटी झड़कने दे तब खा लेना। अब तक चिड़ा पूरी तरह सूख चुका था। तीसरी बार बिल्ली खाने की कहने लगी तो चिड़िया ने कहा- मौसी, देख वो कुत्तों की बारात आ रही है, बिल्ली ये सुनकर उस तरफ़ देखने लगी और दोनों चिड़ा और चिड़िया फुर्र से उड़ गये। मायूस बिल्ली उन्हें देखती ही रह गई।
